چکیده

I assume that most students have encountered Turing machines before. (Students who have not may want to look at Sipser’s book [3].) A Turing machine is defined by an integer k ≥ 1, a finite set of states Q, an alphabet Γ, and a transition function δ : Q×Γk → Q×Γk−1×{L, S,R}k where: • k is the number of (infinite, one-dimensional) tapes used by the machine. In the general case we have k ≥ 3 and the first tape is a read-only input tape, the last is a write-once output tape, and the remaining k−2 tapes are work tapes. For Turing machines with boolean output (which is what we will mostly be concerned with in this course), an output tape is unnecessary since the output can be encoded into the final state of the Turing machine when it halts.

P Systems with Active Membranes: Attacking NP-Complete Problems

P systems are parallel Molecular Computing models based on processing mul-tisets of objects in cell-like membrane structures. Various variants were already shown to be computationally universal, equal in power to Turing machines. In this paper one proposes a class of P systems whose membranes are the main active components, in the sense that they directly mediate the evolution and the communica...

1 2 Ju n 20 01 A lemma on a total function defined over the Baker – Gill – Solovay set of polynomial Turing

We prove here a lemma that connects some properties of the so–called “counterexample function” to the P = NP conjecture over the Baker– Gill–Solovay set of polynomial Turing machines to the behavior of the same function “at large,” over the set of all polynomial Turing machines. ∗Partially supported by FAPESP and CNPq. Deterministic Polynomial Solution for NP by an Abstractional Machine

In this paper it is argued that a particular kind of mechanical process called mechanical abstractional process offers capabilities that surpass those of a general mechanical process (e.g., Turing machines). Abstractional machines, which follow a mechanical abstractional process, are defined, and it is proved that an abstractional machine is able to solve NP-complete problems in polynomial time...

Separating Cook Completeness from Karp-Levin Completeness Under a Worst-Case Hardness Hypothesis

We show that there is a language that is Turing complete for NP but not many-one complete for NP, under a worst-case hardness hypothesis. Our hypothesis asserts the existence of a non-deterministic, double-exponential time machine that runs in time O(2 nc ) (for some c > 1) accepting Σ∗ whose accepting computations cannot be computed by bounded-error, probabilistic machines running in time O(2 ...
